With my birthday quickly approaching (19 days of shopping time left) and Christmas (49 days of shopping time left), I have begun to put some serious thought into my wish list hehe. The last few days I have stumbled upon some amazing products, and have also remembered some wishes of Christmas' past. The only thing that is not so great about a Foodie Christmas is that all of the exciting new toys, spices, and appliances come after all of my holiday baking is done! I always get the immediate and extended family's cries of, "What do you want...I need a list?!" which will immediately be followed by their cries of, "You want a...what the hell is that/where do you buy that!?" So, I started thinking about it today, and couldn't resist posting what I have thought of so far, especially since all of it is food related!
How about anyone else...gadgets/items that your family thinks you are crazy for asking for? Or maybe they just don't get why a baggie of lavender would totally make your holidays complete? What are some cooking/kitchen things on your wish lists? Does anyone else run out to the day after Christmas sales to stock up on all of the amazing kitchen supplies that go on mega sale? Last year I made out like a bandit at Macy's on a Martha Stewart Enamel Cast Iron Oval 7 Quart Casserole, wooden spoons, cast iron trivets, and baking pans! Please let me know that I am not the only one out there!
The List...Believe Me...I've checked it twice!
- Silicon baking sheets and fondant work mats...I think I have filled a landfill with parchment paper during my 20 some odd years of baking. :-X I am not proud of this fact and would like to change my polluting ways!
- A legit old school pizzelle maker. Not one of those new fangled plug it in the wall ones...I want one that has to be hunted down on Ebay or pried out of an Italian grandmom's hands. The kind that forces me to stand over the stove for hours on end while my pizzelles cook one by one. I would also love it if the pizzelle waffle cone maker came with it...total bonus! I am totally willing to go through the painstaking process of cleaning a used one that needs some love!
- Some hard to find spices, such as the godforsaken cooking grade lavender! I refuse to pay William Sanoma's exorbitant prices, not to mention the half hour drive to the store with no guarantee that it is carried at that store or in stock...there are better deals out there on the internet, and I will pay back the giver of said lavender in honey-lavender cupcakes topped with croquembouche-esque caramel thread nests!
- Cooking flavor oils such as peppermint, peanut, and anise for baking. The subzi mandi in Lindenwold (it's across from the speedline) has an EXTENSIVE collection that also includes some unique flavors like Rose oil! They always have really amazing stuff going on in their spice aisle!
- An icing pipping set. I have desperately tried collecting metal pipping tips and couplings, and every time I get a few and use them and my collection finally feels like it is getting somewhere, someone in my house (who shall remain nameless for their own protection) trashes them because they don't know what they are and doesn't feel like putting them in the dishwasher! So, I would absolutely LOVE the set of tips that come in the nice little carrying case with the couplings, along with some polyester pipping/pastry bags, and the pipping pastry bag stand. I think this gift would actually bring tears of joy to my eyes (<--dead serious, not a stitch of sarcasm).
- A cake decorating turntable...the mess of icing where the cake meets my plates drives me NUTS and it looks so sloppy after all of the other hard work I put into decorating a cake!
- A cake and cupcake carrier. I travel with food to family functions all of the time, and am always worried that something is going to get bumped or scrapped in the car and look a mess when I finally get there!
- Offset handle icing spatulas! I would wield these around the kitchen like a cake decorating samurai!
- Rolling pin rings, so I can finally roll my doughs evenly!
- The ever so popular Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer. *Sigh* I've only seen them and touched them in stores, and I dream of the day I plug one in to the wall in my kitchen and prostrate towards its counter space. My love of the Kitchen Aid Mixer is embarrassing, to the point of my family staring at me awkwardly and walking away as I pet the floor model lovingly every time I pass one. I can't help but marvel at the smoothness of the joint movement, the colors of the models, its sturdiness, the multiple beaters, hooks, and whips...what it comes down to is this - I don't want children, and I will even pass up marriage, if it means I can have one of these machines. To quote an acquaintance, "I'm only getting married so I can register for the Kitchen Aid Mixer!"
- Lastly, the gift I know I will NEVER get...a new gas stove/oven! Our current one is a champ, but is getting very old and is starting to bake unevenly...I hate when my cookies burn! Someday my prince (aka new oven) will come!
